Spoken language translation is nowadays of a great relevance in our increasingly globalized World, both from a social and economical point of view. It is one of the major challenges in speech signal processing, automatic speech recognition and machine translation, driving an important research activity in these areas. The paper will review main established approaches (models and search) and novel ideas for SLT under the statistical framework. The article put emphasis in the main proposed architectures to combine speech and translation knowledge: decoupled or loosely coupled and integrated architectures.
